Together, we can change what a child will see! Your philanthropy in partnership with Horn Point’s advanced research can change the future of the Chesapeake Bay and even the world. Why Horn Point Is the Ideal Partner For Those Who Care About The Bay: Horn Point is the premiere environmental science laboratory in Maryland conducting extensive research on restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. Horn Point was at the forefront in identifying excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) as the major source of Bay pollution as far back as 1983. This ground-breaking information and important research that followed, has helped Maryland to strategically shape its Bay restoration policy. Today, Horn Point’s extensive research is now leading the search for solutions for the Bay. Horn Point is educating the next generation of environmental leaders for the Chesapeake Bay. Our marine science graduate program attracts a top echelon of young marine scientists to learn from our internationally respected research faculty. Horn Point encourages youngsters from Kindergarten through college to be excited and knowledgeable about science. We are unique among outdoor and environmental programs in the region because we offer environmental science education. Our activities are age-appropriate and reflect the research techniques of our laboratory. We partner with local school districts to provide curriculum-related research science.
The University System of Maryland compensates Horn Point faculty for nine of their 12 months of work and does not include any support for faculty research. Grant sources such as the Environmental Protection Agency, NOAA, and the National Science Foundation, have traditionally been the greatest supporters of scientific research. In recent years, funds available for distribution by such agencies have remained static, if not reduced, and competition has become more intense. Local governments are entering into fewer contracts for environmental research. For the last five years, the legislature has cut funds for the University of Maryland System resulting in a decrease of state support for Horn Point Laboratory. At the same time, many costs including those for health benefits, utilities and competitive salaries to attract and maintain the best faculty and staff have increased. We are currently able to accept only one-tenth of the students who apply to our graduate program. There is simply not sufficient funding from public sources to provide the intense level of research required - right now- to restore the Bay. Please consider these ways you can partner with Horn Point to change the future of the Chesapeake Bay and even the world:
