Harmful
algal blooms (HABS) are increasing in frequency and magnitude in coastal
waters. HPL scientists are involved in investigation of the causes and
consequences of HAB events in Chesapeake Bay and around the world. Some
examples of HAB projects at HPL are: |

The interdisciplinary
project “Grazing
and Windows of Opportunity for Dinoflagellate Blooms” is
investigating the effects of microzooplankton and mesozooplankton grazing
on the formation and persistence of dinoflagellate blooms in the two
tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. It is hypothesized that blooms can
only occur when “windows of low grazing pressure” coincide
with environmental conditions suitable for dinoflagellate growth. |
