Maryland
Sea Grant, with support from the National Science
Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates
(REU) program supports fourteen undergraduates
while they conduct marine research on the Chesapeake
Bay — the program is especially designed
for students majoring in such fields as biology,
chemistry, ecology, physics, engineering, mathematics
and marine and environmental science. During
this 12-week program,
each student will work with an advisor on an
individual research project at one of two labs
located on the Chesapeake Bay: the University
of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's
(UMCES) Chesapeake Biological Laboratory at Solomons,
Maryland, or its Horn Point Laboratory, at Cambridge,
Maryland.
Research
areas include: • estuarine processes • fisheries • benthic
environment • biogeochemistry • physical
oceanography • submerged aquatic vegetation • contaminants • chemical
oceanography • molecular biology
The
Maryland Sea Grant REU Program will provide each
fellow with a stipend, housing and
round-trip travel expenses to the University
of Maryland. Applicants should have completed
two years of study toward a bachelor's degree
and must still be undergraduates in the Fall
of the they apply. Students must also be U.S. citizens
or permanent residents of the U.S. or its possessions.
The program is particularly interested in encouraging
applications from underrepresented groups in
the marine sciences. To apply online, visit the REU
web site or contact Maryland Sea Grant at 301-403-4220.
