COSSE-MA Course Description
Title: Taking the Pulse of the Oceans
The Oceans:
We are amazed by its beauty, power, and tranquility. We flock to its shores for vacations. We are captivated by its creatures. Yet we know so little about it. Scientists (oceanographers) have long studied it, but much of the information has remained in the halls of science. Now a new technology is emerging which will allow us to take a peak at the oceans through Ocean Observing Systems. Join the scientists as they explore the oceans through the use of these technological systems. Study ocean movement and its effect on our weather, ocean critters and pollution. Learn how to predict what the ocean temperature may be when you go to the beach or where the best fishing spots may be based on ocean temperatures. Bring back to your classroom activities that use this real-time data to stimulate your students in ocean science and meet education standards.

Fellowship:
In this exciting immersion program, teacher fellows learn about Chesapeake research from its headwaters to the Bay in an introductory weeklong workshop. They will then take up reside at one of four University of Maryland premier research facilities working alongside scientists on projects that include wetland restoration, oyster and fish aquaculture, nutrient dynamics, and marine pollution. They will also create a student lesson that builds on their research experience. Teacher fellows will refine these lessons during the academic year, testing them with students and sharing them with colleagues at the 2006 Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Educators conference. Teacher fellows will gain improved teachers’ scientific inquiry skills and knowledge of Chesapeake Bay watershed science, stipend, classroom supplies, and some travel expenses.
