Related Meetings & Workshops Calendar
- International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers
(ISOPE) upcoming conference schedule can be obtained at: http://www.isope.org.
- October 1-2, 1999: There will be a NSF funded
workshop "Assessing impacts of Arctic bathymetry changes and fresh water inputs on
shelf and ocean circulation for the past 20,000 years" to be held at the Naval
Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, USA. The intent of the workshop is to gain new
understanding on how changes in arctic fresh water inputs and variations in bathymetry of
straits, channels and shelves in the Arctic effected water mass exchange amongst the
Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. More information may be obtained here.
- February 6-9, 2000: 15th Internationl Symposium on
Okhotsk Sea & Sea Ice and the 2nd Ice Scour and Arctic Marine Pipelines Workshop,
MOMBETSU-2000 Conference, Mombetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. More information may be obtained here.
- March 16-18, 2000: The 30th International Arctic
Workshop will be held on Thursday through Saturday, March 16-18, 2000 at the Institute of
Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, USA. The meeting will
consist of oral and poster presentations covering all aspects of high-latitude
environments, past and present. More information on registration, program, abstract
submission, and student support may be obtained at: http://instaar.colorado.edu/AW2000.
- April 13-17, 2000: JGOFS 2nd Open Science Conference,
Bergen, Norway. The Conference, "Ocean Biogeochemistry: A New Paradigm" focuses
on the challenges of the JGOFS Synthesis and Modelling phase. More information may be
obtained at: http://ads.smr.uib.no/jgofs/conference.htm.
- May 6-7, 2000: The 6th National Student Conference on
Northern Studies will take place at Université Laval in Québec, Canada. Senior
undergraduate and graduate students from any discipline, whose research interests concern
any aspect of northern research or Polar Studies (including Native Studies) are invited to
participate. More information may be obtained at: http://aix1.uottawa.ca/associations/aucen-acuns/en/n_s_conf.html.
- July 9-13, 2000: The third SO-JGOFS Symposium to be
held in Brest-France (Quartz Congress Center), aims to make relevant contributions to the
synthesis and modelling effort that is leaded by the JGOFS Scientific Committee. More information may be obtained at: http://ads.smr.uib.no/jgofs/announce.htm#so.
Related Announcements and Publications
- The University of Washington and the National Snow and Ice
Data Center have recently completed updating and revising the TIROS-N Operational Vertical
Sounder (TOVS) Polar Pathfinder (Path-P) data set. TOVS Path-P data are comprised of
gridded daily Arctic atmospheric parameters derived from several NOAA satellites. Data are
available via ftp from the National Snow and Ice Data Center at: http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu/NSIDC/CATALOG/ENTRIES/nsi-0027.html.
- "Polar
Geography" is a quarterly publication first published in 1977 as a
vehicle for making available, in English translation, important Soviet, Japanese, and west
European research on the polar regions. Over the years, the journal's focus has shifted to
the north circumpolar region with emphasis on the Russian Arctic, publishing articles
dealing with human as well as physical dimensions of Arctic and Subarctic environments.
The new editorial team from Byrd Polar Research Center and the Department of Geography at
The Ohio State University are broadening the geographic scope and scientific content of
Polar Geography. For further information and submission of manuscripts contact:

- Call for papers for Rapid Climate Change Special Feature:
The National Academy of Sciences is promoting the physical sciences, social sciences, and
mathematics through its house journal, the "Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences" (PNAS). Specifically, PNAS is running a series of
Special Features, each of which consists of 6-10 short review articles on an area of
particular interest. The next Special Feature is on rapid climate change and scheduled to
appear in the Winter of 1999. More information can be obtained at: http://www.pnas.org/misc/callfor.shtml.
- The publication "Arctic Social Sciences:
Opportunities in Arctic Research," published by the Arctic Research
Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) for the National Science Foundation Arctic Social
Sciences Program, is now available at: http://www.arcus.org/ASSP/fr_download.html.
